Serendipitous Toilet Training

Joshua has been diaper phobic since his diarrheal illness, so tonite while I was tricking him into wearing training pants, he thought they looked like daddy's underwear, so he went to the potty and peed twice! I was utterly amazed.

Elevation!

Annette has been gone to Vietnam this week, and we both miss her alot--especially since we were also sick with stomache flu and diarrhea was all over the house. This past Wednesday was probably the most exhausting day I've had as a parent, with Josh waking up at 4:30am, and a seemingly nonstop pooping/cleaning session that didn't end until midnite. Boy was I glad to see our nanny Carmen on Thursday. I thought to myself--we don't pay her enough!

But Joshua's back to good health these days, and today while we were riding the car listening to U2, Joshua really took to the song, "Elevation!" It's pretty sweet to hear him rock out in the back shouting U2 lyrics.

All the time, I look at Joshua and am just so amazed and proud of him. He listens to explanations really well and is always surprising me with the things he knows and what he seems to be understanding. I explained to him that we were going to the store to return a DVD that was "broken" and when I said that once we gave it back, he added that we would get a "new one."

He likes to talk about the "electricity" in the wires, that the "fire" comes out of the walls, and into our appliances. The other day, even though he loves his Thomas shoes, he told me that his "foot hurt" because his toes were getting squished, and so we had to move on to new shoes. He is always pointing out "globes" he sees in museums and stores--does he know that the world we live on is round? He loves to admire his own artwork, and points out his drawings and what they are supposed to represent and what colors they are. He'll see things for the first time, and know that something is a "map." Isn't that type of conceptual thinking unusual for a 26 month old? He laughs at silly pictures, like a chicken sitting on top of a cake.

Now if I can only get him to brush his teeth!

I eat grown up food

Here are some funny things Joshua has said recently:

During dinner one nite while he was eating pasta by himself: "I eat grown up food. I grow bigger and bigger." Joshua's grandmother in California had said that she would give him "grown up" food like kim chee, and spicy food once he's bigger and grown up. Sometimes he will point at prohibited foods like nuts, and says, "That's for grown ups!"

He had tripped and fell down, falling on his head. He laid on the ground on a little bit, and then stood up holding his head to say, "I need a doctor!"

"Uncle Ryan's teeth fell out." Annette told Joshua that one of her cousins--uncle Ryan--didn't brush his teeth so his teeth fell out, to encourage Joshua to brush his. So whenever he brushes his own teeth, he reminds us (and himself) about Uncle Ryan's teeth.

"Tiger coming, I'm scared." Though not related to the tiger mauling incident at the SF zoo, Joshua has a natural healthy fear of tigers. Ever since he was younger, he's played the game, "Tiger bite you!" He occassionally adds, "Tiger coming to bite everybody!"
